Digital Distraction

The annoyance of the mobile phone

The mobile phone is a wonderful thing

Thousands of melodies for when it rings

Which seems to be less and less these days

As it’s more of a gadget for you to play

Candy Crush Saga or update Facebook

Or to take from your pocket for a cursory look

To see if you’ve any notifications

That you’d not noticed through subtle vibrations

It rules the roost, the bane of your life

Like an itchy rash or a nagging wife

You download apps to monitor your health

And play games for imaginary wealth

You’re hooked on it, it’s just like a drug

Except with a screen and a three pin plug

You can’t put it down without a fight

Your face illuminated by it’s screen at night

Technology moves at such a dangerous pace

That lump in your hand's a waste of space

Just a technological dinosaur

New one’s much better, does so much more

So much much more than you really need

But you’ve got a habit that you need to feed

You need the latest electronic porn

Before the last one you can truly mourn

There’s always one better that dents your pride

Your greed for updates never satisfied

But this lust for more is not self generated

It’s the big corporations that have promulgated

The notion for cyclical consumption

And our shiny gadget owning compulsion
